NYCC 2016

HELLA RAFTING. 2016. Ink & watercolor on paper, 17 × 11″.

In case you hadn't heard, I'll be at New York Comic Con next week! As excited as I am to be back (this is the 10th anniversary show, right?) I'll only be able to attend for 2 days, Thursday and Friday. My dad, Joe Rivera, will be at the table on Saturday in my stead.

I'm afraid my commission list is completely full (and then some) but I'll have plenty of prints and originals to sell. This year, my art dealer, Splash Page, will be with me in artist alley along with several other artists in the group. Keep an eye out for our banners (pictured below).

We'll be happy to sign books throughout the day, but probably won't have time for sketching. Autographs are free, but we'll be accepting donations for the Hero Initiative. Hope you can stop by!

ATTACK ON TITAN ANTHOLOGY COVER. 2016.
Gouache and Acryla Gouache on bristol board, 13 × 19″.

This was a rare case in terms of process. Originally intended as a pin-up in a larger anthology, I completed the first iteration in my "comics" style of ink with digital color. After turning it in, my editors asked if I could do a painted version. I said okay. (But only after renegotiating my fee :)

This meant I had to gather a little more reference than the first go-round — from billowing steam to plentiful teeth, I had to find the right photos to base my painting on. I also used the Handy Art Tool to get lighting effects on a head and skull. (Nice demo video here.)

At the bottom of the post, you'll see my original version. While passable, if definitely lacks the punch of the painted version. And, lucky for me, my editors decided to use it as the cover for the whole anthology.

Lobster Johnson

LOBSTER JOHNSON. 2016.
Ink & watercolor on paper, 9 × 12″.

I've been painting up a storm the last couple weeks — been averaging at least a commission per day — all in preparation for New York Comic Con. I'll be at table BB-1 in Artist Alley along with my fellow Splash Page artists. (Sadly, BB-8 was taken.) My wife was kind enough to design the banners for our group, which will be debuting at the show.

And before I forget, I've got a variant cover coming out this week from Dark Horse: The Strain: Mister Quinlan — Vampire Hunter #1. (It's fitting, as I'm currently reading/listening to Dracula, a novel I've been meaning to read for years.) I'll post the cover, along with some "wacky reference" this Wednesday.

ATTACK ON TITAN (3 of 3). 2016.Ink(ed by Joe Rivera)
on bristol board with digital color, 11 × 17″.

This pin-up is my interpretation of a pivotal scene from Attack on Titan. I provided several thumbnail sketches with various subjects, but my editors asked if I could focus on the Armored Titan, specifically this fight scene. I really liked this drawing by AoT creator, Hajime Isayama, and so I just drew it from a slightly different angle. (Hope he doesn't mind.)
